Crunches are for the purpose of building muscles mainly in the upper abdomen. However, they are the key to six-pack abs if you have little belly fat.
To reduce belly fat, good excersises are running/jogging, jumping rope, and jumping jacks. These are cardiovascular/aerobic exercises. Other cardiovascular/aerobic exercises are swimming, hiking, and step-climbing. Do these and you'll have no belly fat in no time.
Big causes of belly fat are bad posture/slouching because one of the biggest jobs of the abdomen is to hold the body up. Stress is another big factor because when the body is stressed, your body makes a high-calorie chemical and sends it through your blodstream, adding fat to unwanted areas.
You also should be on a low calorie diet, but not on one less than 1500 calories a day, because muscles are the first food for the body if it does not have enough energy (calories). This is because muscles are protein and protein is the best food for your body. The diet should consist of fruits and vegetables and you should remove all junk foods such as pizza, french fries, chips, pretzels, burgers, Pop-Tarts, and so on. NEVER GO TO MCDONALDS...their food is extremely high in calories; three of their shakes have over 1100 calories!!! For more info on McDonalds nutrional info go to http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.nutrition.index1.html
If you want to get a six-pack and have little belly fat, you should buy a Cross Crunch for 30 dollars. To do this go to http://crosscrunch.com.
I hope this helped you!!!

Building muscle is going to help you lose the fat, so I would never hesitate to exercise. Losing fat and gaining muscle go hand in hand. And, if you are a female, it takes a lot of effort to start looking 'bulky' if you lift a lighter amount of weight and do more repetitions instead.

No. You should do both at the same time. Switch off - cardio one day and weights the other. Each type of exercise works out your body in a different way and you need both to tone up. Remember to give your body rest between sessions, that way you can recover.
Of course, what you eat will make a big difference too.

Any cardio excercise is good for losing fat. That is anything that gets the heart pumping quickly for an extended period of time. Situps will tone your muscle but unless it is teamed up with some sort of cardio you may not lose the fat.
