then how would you define my nephew?

I hear some people say that they dont consider it to be a baby until it takes a breath on its own soooo...

My nephew was born at only 18 weeks gestation. His eyes were still sealed, and his hands and feet were still webbed. He is now a totally normal and healthy 8 year old boy. Are you going to tell me that since he couldnt breathe without a machine for a while after birth, that he wasnt a real person? I personally find this mind set to be sad. Heck, I was a preemie too. Only 2 months early, but 21 years ago, that was bad. I couldnt breathe on my own either. At what point did I become a "real person"?!

This isn't really a question. It's only intention is to get attention and start today's Yahoo! Answers abortion debate. Everyone is entitled to their own opinon. So just leave it alone.

Thanks for sharing your story about your nephew and yourself. A baby is a baby from the time of conception. If an older person who cannot breathe on his/her own, and is put on a respirator, is a person- so why could anyone think that a baby is not a baby until it can breathe on it's own. By the way, your nephew, as I am sure you know had lungs, they were not fully developed and that does not make a person not a person either. When a baby is born, they are still helpless, until they grow more, and can start taking care of themselves. May your story begin to spark truth into the minds of people who think abortion is right. It never ceases to amaze me that a person who has a miscarriage let's say at 8-18 weeks mourns the loss of their baby- while another woman has an abortion and it is not murder, because we call it choice. God bless you, and I am so grateful that both you and your nephew are well- maybe your nephew can use his story in the years to come.

Some people don't see a miracle like we do. The baby practices breathing exercises in the womb. So when it comes out i can but sometimes it don't get a chance to practice and has to have help. But as long as there is a heartbeat then its a soul and that means its a human being baby. For your nephew to be born at 18wks and make it to a 8yr old boy. Thats a miracle it really is. Im glad you don't see what other people do.

Well, if it's not a baby human being in the womb, what kind of baby is it?

And it IS a person when it is conceived. The baby has the same genes as a thirty year old as it does when it is at 2 weeks gestation.

People who say this are looking for an excuse to justify abortion as a means of birth control.

A baby is a real person in the womb, It is absolute nonsense to think the baby must breathe on its own. Ever see an ultrasound and listen to the little heart beat.???

I have to admit I consider them to be real people as soon as their heart starts beating so about 6 weeks. I know most people wont agree with me, but thats how I feel about it.

A baby is a "real person" as early as conception, IMHO.
