Cotton was not important because of slavery.
Slavery was important because of cotton.
Cotton was an extremely profitable cash crop, due to its use in the textile industry, but was extremely labor intensive.
Thus slaves were needed.

You are not serious are you? Must be a new school assignment. They had no polyester back then. Your clothes were made of cotton, seeds were used for feed, oil for cooking. Get a book and read about it. Cotton is still important. Your sheets are cotton, your underwear may be. Most decent shirts and blouses are cotton. It is the best fabric around, not just during what you call "slavery".

Hey Plyr,
Cotton use to be labor intensive. Now there are machines that harvest and remove the seeds giving a yield of high grade cotton. Slaves use to pick cotton by hand, one piece at a time. Cotton is important now, as it was then for clothing.

It was the "in" thing at the time. It was cheap, easy to harvest by those who didn't have to, lucrative and fashionable
