Flatten out a coffee filter. You have a box of them in the kitchen. You dont have to buy them.

for a computer fan? Use pantyhose. My home theater PC has one large intake fan and I bought a $2 fan filter (holder thing) and replaced the foam there with a square of pantyhose. I open the holder to clean the hose by running it under a faucet. I let it dry and put it back. You can also just fasten it directly to the fan but that makes cleaning it more difficult.

Try using a coffee filter. Some of those filters are just as good as a coffee filter.

Go to a fabric store and ask to see "interfacing". It comes in various degrees of porosity, thicknesses and some seems to be more paper than fabric. I'm sure you will find something there.
