From the beginning of human civilization, until the late 1800s, in most places. Slavery still exists in some places.

In this country we think of blacks a being the slaves and we forget that people have been enslaved from the start of time, and it wasn't relegated to the blacks only. Read the Bible even if you don't believe in God, the Bible has been known to be a wonderful history book and it fraught with the stories of slaves. If you think that slavery went away in the 1860s I would say that you were wrong, as a matter fact it became much more pronounced, Hugh plantations were divided up and put out on shares. The same people that owned them before still owned them but they removed a lot of their responsibility. During slavery in this country a slave owner was responsible to feed, cloth, house, health care, provide quartering of some kind for those that he owned. Take away ownership and take away the responsibility of taken care of them as well. By word of mouth I was told by elderly folks that if they hadn't freed the slaves that they would have done it on their own. as the cost was much greated than to hire the work done. People would work for shares and often their share was greater that the owners share but the owner had more money in his pocket afterwards. Did you every hear about the company store? This was away for the land owner to keep everyone in their place(?) they would charge in the company store what ever they needed and the owner would carry their note until harvest, everything in the company store was more expensive than any other store but this is where a share cropper could get all the credit hat he needed to make it, come time of harvest there was little left for them to live on. The company store is still there and the owners are still there,.....Slavery gone away?,......I don't think so

Slavery has existed from the beginning of recorded history and unfortunately still persists in some parts of the world. Fortunately most of the civilized world has outlawed the practice. If you're refering to slavery in the US, slavery existed in the United States more or less from the founding of the English colonies that became America to the ratification of the 13th Amendment which formally outlawed slavery in 1865.

Slavery has existed for as long as humans have subjugated one another, and in some Muslim countries is still carried on. In the real sense slavery is still with us and is alive and well.

Slavery originated in the BRONZE AGE(7,000-5,000 B.C.) in the middle east and (6,000-2,000 B.C.) in europe. When people began to domesticate animals and begin agriculture then possessions became the norm. Before people had just moved about and hunted and gathered. There was no time or opportunity to gain much possessions. When however people settled in permanent villages in the NEOLITHIC(NEW STONE) AGE (8,000-7,000./6,000 B.C.)-possessions became accumulated and important. There was a surplus. When metals were discovered and we came into what is commonly named THE BRONZE AGE(although bronze came later-a mixture of copper and tin-copper being at the beginning), then there arose chiefs, war bands(from the old hunting parties) and the idea that instead of killing one's enemies, one could make use of them-put them to work. The enemy's women already having been made use of. So villages began to attack or have dispute with each other. The victors would take whoever remained and keep them in bondage till they died. It is interesting to note that before with the comming of agriculture that women's position slipped and because you wanted YOUR sons to inherit, women became chattels.

And of course with the comming of cities and civilzation the chiefs became kings and accquired more slaves. In time slaves became more specialised. In the Roman Empire the situation had improved somewhat. Claudius I ruled that any slave who being sick was abandonded and then recovered was free. Most slaves recieved a bit of money they could use to save up and buy their freedom. And there were the Gladiators and Gladiatorixes(female gladiators) who were freed if they were sucsessful in the arena(most having been convicted of capital crimes and the rest volunteers) and many who became very rich and very famous. Also a slave could be freed by the master by MANUMISSION(declaration in front of witnesses) or upon a will.
Once freed a slave(a male-as women weren't citizens) could join the VIGILES(the fire brigade) and after 5 years would be given CITIZENSHIP. With the right to join the legions. The Greeks also treated their slaves fairly well.

In the middle ages the west mostly had SERFS, although the east had slaves. In modern times much of the slavery in the west was race based. It was only in the past 150 years that slavery in the west has gone. However in many parts of Africa and the Middle East, slavery, still goes on. It is just hidden. And then there is the SEX SLAVE industries. Slavery still exsists but it is not official in most of the world, and even where it does, the nations do not like to admit it. So the bastardy still goes on. It has lasted about at least 8,000 years. Too long for an evil to go on.

And incidently. Isn't it interesting. That first came the enslavement of women-because of greed and ego. When it first came about the men at the time didn't give a second thought about it. Little did they realise that the concept and evil would spread until millions of men themselves were made and kept slaves. Once they let the evil out of the bag it didn't guarantee that it would be limited. This is a lesson for all of us. You do not feed people to the crockadile hoping it will not eat you. It will eat you-if only lastly. Because men at the time of the new stone age went along with this evil-their decendants paid the price and still do today. Compromise not with any evil-for if you do it will continue till it engulfs you. They made their moral choices and after all-moral choices have physical consequences. Slavery has been a hideous blight in history. It's past has been sordid. Time this filfthy vile thing, this bastardisation of humanity, was denied a future. For all must remember, like the men in the new stone age, if it can happen to any other human being-it can happen to you.
