Brenda N above me is right, 50 states 48 contiguous states. Tk_Pinna even went so far as to name them. That won't do any good as they probably don't know the states by name anyway. There is only one way to prove it. Look at the American flag. Each star represents a state, and there are 50 of them. Count them. These belong to the U.K. Baja California is a large peninsula belonging to Mexico. The Virgin Islands are located in the West Indies. The western portion of the islands belong to the U.S. (but not a state); the eastern portion to the U.K. Washington is the capital city of the U.S. But, it is located in the District of Columbia (not a state), situated between Virginia and Maryland.
Guam, Marshall Islands, Caroline Islands, Mariana Islands, American Samoa, etc. are U.S. island possessions in the Paicific Ocean.

There are 50 U.S. states, plus Puerto Rico which isn't a state per se but IS under the US ordiance.
It should be considered a state, I think, but that's just me.
