I know the internet is working because the router is connected through my desktop and I"m able to connect via my laptop, however I can't surf any pages with either internet explorer or mozilla firefox on my desktop? any ideas what could be wrong?

go to start -> network connections -> view network connections -> click on the local area network icon -> right click -> and select repair/ or click disable and then click enable.

try reconnecting the cables

try power cycling.

Make sure the line is connected all the in the back of your desktop it is check the line from the modem.

On your desktop, does it say you are connected? If yes, it may be a problem with your browser, so I would uninstall them and install them again. If not, you probably didn't install the network on your desktop right.

Power cycle your cable modem and router, that is power them both off for two full minutes and plug them in again. It sounds like an IP conflict.
