I have always wanted to be on Broadway. I have the talent. I can sing, dance, and act. I would like to move to NYC in the next year or so. I would like to prove to my parents that I can make it. What should I do? What is the first step?

You really have a long way to go. You don't just get on Broadway. You may have talent, but so do countless others and most are still waiting tables. You need loads of experience in community theater, school plays, acting workshops, etc., and to know the right people who can help you. Most agents only take clients by referrals. You don't start out on Broadway, but instead in off-Broadway productions, and even those are hard to land. It's nice you want to prove this to your parents but it is very expensive to live in NYC, and there are thousands of people who want to be on Broadway. When you go to auditions, believe me, you will find that many can sing, dance, and act even better than you do, and you may have to go on countless auditions before you ever land any sort of small role, even if you do at all. Just wanting to prove to your parents is not the right reason to do this. It's yourself you need to satisfy. Get your education and begin locally, because when you are living in a one room apartment that you cannot afford, working three jobs just to pay the rent, and not getting any callbacks, you may decide that proving it isn't really worth it.

Only a Talent Agent, Casting Director or Producer can determine if you have talent.

Talent Agents want to see that you are proficient in Jazz dance, as well as, have an excellent Broadway "belt" voice." You need a strong resume with a lot of regional theater credits.

You will compete with actors that have been performing since they were children. Many of them grew up in New York City and are seasoned performers.

In NYC, get into a competitive acting class (where you must audition) to see how well you can hold your own against your competition. If you don't get in or you are not good compared to everyone else, consider a new line of work. You also may want to consider a college with a good theatre program-- graduating from a good school will often get you appointments with agents if you have no other credits, not to mention the training.

Awww...I know the feeling bud, but it's not that easy. It would take years. Ask your self: how commited am I? Get a voice teacher/professional singer, dancer, actor and anyone else that doesn't know you very well to tell you how good you actually are, because if you watch American Idol you know that there are a lot of people out there who think that they are awesome (mostly because their friends have told them so, trying to make them feel good about themselves) but they actually suck. I have no way of knowing if you are one of those people or not, but just to make sure that you don't make a fool of yourself, I would get other people's (not your friends) opinion of how good you are. Good Luck!

is proving something to your parents really the reason to do something?

the only reason you must want something is for yourself. if you want validation, acting is not the profession for you.
