There are a few philosophies toward the path of providing customer good service (whatever your line of work is).
First, treat the customer as you would want to be treated. The customer is not just a number. Remind yourself that you could find yourself in his/her shoes as a consumer too. Customers, and we are all customers, deserve respect.
Second, listen clearly to the situation/question/issue that the customer poses and repeat it back to him or her. This will assure the customer that you are actively interested in them, and it will help you be clear on what's going on.
Third, always be polite and courteous. There's no excuse for a bad attitude even if the customer gives you one.
These approaches will open the door to good customer service no matter what work you do. The actual service you provide your customers will then fall into place.

one thing to say
Never EVER have an answering machine because people like to talk to others as human interaction. It is very rude to have a machine for customer service.
