of course, the kids who say "Jordan was the best ever and no one will ever be better than the grea tmichael jordan" (almost as if that sentence was one long word) are also people who never saw him play, especially in his early years.
Jordan was unquesitonably the biggest ball hog in history... he led the NBA in FGA a record NINE times. He finished 2nd in FGA in 1989, otherwise he would have led the league in FGA TEN years in a row.
Michael took about 23 shots per game over the course of his career... Kobe has taken 18 shots/game over his career.
But here are some numbers for anyone who doesn't beleive MJ was the biggest ball hog of all time...
Jordan, in his career played in 1,072 NBA games.
Wilt Chamberlain played in 1,045 NBA games.
Jordan attempted 24,537 shots in his career.
Wilt attempted 23,497 shots in his career.
That's 1,040 MORE shots by Jordan.
Jordan MADE 12,192 FG in his career.
Wilt made 12,681 FG in his career.
That's 489 FEWER Field Goals made.

But here's the kicker... Jordan took 1,040 more shots than Wilt did, but Jordan played 6,846 FEWER minutes than Wilt. Jordan was not nearly as durable an athlete as Wilt was, and played 41,013 (38.2 min/game) minutes compared to Wilt's 47,859 (45.8 min/game).
Wilt took just under 22.5 shots/game in his career.
Yeah, KOBE's a ball hog...
"Infatuation" with Jordan was an excellent choice of words...
There have been a number of times here on yahoo.answers that someone would ask 'who's the best basketball player ever', and you'll always get 15 or 20 people who just put "michael jordan' down as a two word answer, and have nothing to back up that opinion.

The only record Jordan holds is for highest per game scoring average for a career, at 30.11 (Wilt was at 30.06, both of which round to 30.1). But the reason Jordan's scoring average is higher is because he shot so much more.
Sometimes someone will say "MJ is the greatest because he had six rings and 5 MVPs"... so what?
neither of those are records, so what's the big deal? Jabbar won 6 mvp awards (and six rings)... Bill Russell also won 5 MVPs (along with ELEVEN rings)... so Jordan doesn't outclass either of those guys in any way...
Also, I looked at a list of the all time field goal percentage shooters in NBA history... Jordan is not in the top 50 in that category either, and he's supposed to be the greatest ever?? by what definition?
For my part as a statistical analyst, let me say that anyone who thinks that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time is an idiot... there's absolutely no argument that can be made in his favor

not even the geniuses at ESPN can actually come up with a substanitve argument in Jordan's favor (although they all know that Jordan will never speak to them again if they ever go on record as saying anyone is/was better then M.J.)...
As for Kobe, he is already better and more accomplished than Jordan was at any similar age.

Time will tell how Kobe's career ends up...
And of course, we all know that Michael cheated on his wife a number of times over the years... not to mention his gambling problems... yeah, great role model there, guys. HAPPY?!?!?
The only thing that Kobe needs to improve is instilling confidence in his team mates, but irregardless he is the best in the NBA. His dunks look better than Lebron's. He shoots better and has a nicer handle. How exactly people are hating on this is beyond me.

I've seen Kobe do stuff that Lebron will never do and people can scream Kobe's a rapist and Lebron is MJ till they are blue in the face but it won't alter the truth. That being that Kobe is the best since Jordan and even if he fails from here on out it's because he is being mentally abused in this country right now.
Just say he didn't rape that girl. O.K. because of what he really didn't do he deserved to be robbed of the MVP award and his commercial pressence? And Shaq never got along with Penny Hardaway either that's why he went to the Lakers! And last year Kobe scored less and they won less. They said Jordan was a ball hog back in 1988 and he would never win a championship! And Kobe's bad for cheating on his wife like oh say America's favorite white actor Brad Pitt! The kid above me is right in what he's saying about Wilt and Russell. But I think where Kobe and Jordan get the edge is in entertainment factor.

damn man! hahaha.... speak the truth brother! i actually read your ENTIRE question... wow that was long.
yeah part of the reason kobe is hated is because of all the comparisons. people dont want to see that kobe is a lot like MJ in many ways. because MJ is arguably the best ever, when you compare another player next to him people will argue against that... especially if its kobe bryant. i guess you got lashed out at calling MJ a "ballhog" because even though there is some truth to that, people just dont want to believe it. just like with kobe. kobe WAS a ballhog because he was trying to sell himself as a good player. that was when he's young and a lot of people dont see that he's really trying to share the ball more now. kobe isnt trying to be MJ and i know people have a hard time believing that. kobe is just trying to be kobe and that's all you can really expect for a player like him. the same goes for lebron, d-wade, arenas, AI, KG.... the list goes on.

You raise some really good points in your arguement. But some of your points don't really add up. Like the point about how Wilt shot less and made more field goals. Well I certainly hope he did seeing as he was a center and Michael is a guard/forward. Centers are supposed to have much higher field goal percentages then any other postion because most of there shots are from 3 feet away and there tall enough to get it up there. Also your point about his rings. Michael Jordans championships are a lot diffrent then any others, especially Kobes, because he didn't have a Shaquille O'Neal to help him win them (who by the way was the finals MVP each time they won). Sure Michael had Scottie Pippen, but he wasn't as dominant a player as Shaq was in his prime, and Michael had the game winning shots and games where he absolutly carried his teams to those championships. Now Kobe doesn't have a Shaq, his teams still doing ok (6 games above .500) but isn't and never again will be as good as the team with Shaq. But beside the numbers, what seperates MJ and Kobe are the kind of people they are. Michael Jordan was a true winner, he didn't complain a lot, never whined to the refs like Kobe does (every single possesion), and was a leader. Kobe whines and complains and likes to try to take over a game, and when he doesn't its never his fault they lost. Thats not the kind of person Michael Jordan is. Sure if you want to throw a bunch of numbers at people they look pretty similar, but Kobe Bryant does not even deserve to be compared to Michael Jordan in terms of what he did for his team, and the game of basketball.

You wanna know why people hate Kobe?
You are exactly right, he puts up and plays just like Jordan.
All the stats, all the awsome moves and shots.
But, Jordan was mister sqeeky clean, and other than making some extravegant bets on golf, never did anything wrong, at least not that the public heard about.
Kobe bent some girl over a stool and cheated on his wife, and he did it early in his career.
He also had the odasity to not like Shaq.
OMG that was the last straw.
Those two things were all the media needed to make him into a huge villian.
I bet you would be amazed how many NBA players have bent easy girls over stools on a regular basis, but it never comes to the attention of the public like Kobe did.
Heck, Magic Johnson did it all the time, but everyone loves him.

i believe that you make some interesting points and i do believe that Kobe is an excellent player. I'm not exactly sure i have sat down to
decide who i think the greatest all-time player was ever but this is
how i would arrive at it. points scored would be one of 5 or 6 factors, i would look at did you elevate the players around you . see:Steve Nash.....were you a team leader.....when you scored thirty, did you give up 35 or did you give up 15? how many steals and deflections did you have? you did not mention the other end of
the court and a truly great player must play both ends. tell me
about Kobe, is he on the all-defensive team. i think Michael was. i also think he was in the top 5 in steals at least half his years in the league. i dont think i'll get your vote but i just wanted to inject
a little different thought here and i promise i'm not for mj or against kobe.

It is true that Jordan was a ballhog, but the reason Kobe gets hated on for doing the same thing is because unlike MJ he has not learned how to pull back. Kobe will distribute and be a team player at times, but the second he decides to do it all himself he gets out of control. MJ knew when to take over and when to let go, when to be the scorer and when to just be a distributor. This is something Kobe has yet to practice on a consistent basis. I believe however, that for the sake of his team one day he will.

omg thats why kobe is hated because of the fans.... u cant just throw mj under the bus..
tell me what has kobe proven besides scoring 81 points against the toronto raptors?! yea jordan never did that but he always had the ability to ....especially if he were to play in this league now since the league is so offensive minded who knows how much jordan would score... did kobe ever play against the bad boy pistons of the 80s early 90's???? kobe has trouble playing against the pistons now and they dont even compare to the pistons jordan faced.... ppl nowadays just look at kobe when he dunks... they dont have ppl like barkely,malone,oakley,rodman,80's early 90's pistons
anymore ... they would make you think twice in coming in the lane...jordan rules =ground jordan
todays game is so different than b4 ppl are more interested in making friends than competing against each other man there are sooooooo many reasons u cant compare mj to kobe just stop this nonsense

good work. all the kobe haters who always argue that kobe doesn't share the ball enough and will never be as good as mj always fails to realize that mj was just like kobe before he got pippen and phil jackson became head coach of the bulls. mj could never win the big game by himself and once he started playing team ball and won a ring everyone seemed to forget how he got to that point. true fans of the nba should know their history. kobe and mj are very similar. mj started shooting more jumpers in his later years, kobe is shooting more now. i think all the kobe haters are denying the fact that kobe is taking the same path mj took that made him into the player that everyone knows and loves.

Wow you did your homework! Good points there, yeah a lot of people need to learn a lot more about the NBA and its history. I think most people hate on Kobe though because of his attitude. A lot of people forget that Jordan wasn't the friendliest guy either.

i stopped reading as soon as i saw your argument for Wilt vs. Jordan field goal percentage. You freaking noob, wilt was a center and therefore took higher percentage shots. jordan was a perimeter player and his FG% is amazingly good for his position. I have never seen anyone as noob as you ever in my life.
