Yes it is my understanding that the Taliban are a bunch of orthodox Islamic religionists who wanted to remove the warlords from Afghanistan and introduce strict Islamic code and Sharia law. And for most in Afghanistan, this was acceptable till GWB came along with his pipeline dreams.

I'm afghan and I can categorically say the Taliban were not welcome in Afghanistan, and are generally deemed by the majority of Afghans as Pakistani invaders. That is not to say we were totally happy with the United States attacking Afghanistan with dishonest intentions. However, we cannot deny that their Machiavellian goals have rid us of the evil that is the Taliban regime.

Edit

How can you tell me what is what, when I have first hand experience of the situation? If you look at the history of Afghanistan, it is clear it was a moderate state before civil war, even before the Russian invasion. The Taliban took advantage of a volatile country in need of order, it was NOT welcomed by any means. This is FACT. Do not insult me. You aslo missed my above point. The US was not welcome either, but at least in their selfish aim they managed to rid the taliban "oppression"- even if it was not their goal.

my point about the taliban being deemed as pakistani iswhat afghans 'BELIEVE' of the taliban (as in their influence) despite what is, or is not true.

One more point, 'afghani' is the currency in Afghanistan. It seems that you also don't know 'what's what'.

edit

If one afghan oppresses the other, then yes.

Regardless of legitimacy the fact remains that human rights conditions are better now than during Taliban regime. And what are u saying? That I should fly to Afghanistan and fight the US? You are clearly beyond reasoning.

If they were just a 'religious movement' that would be one thing but their actions have shown them to be dangerous and very extreme in their practicies and beliefs. When that begin to effect other peoples freedoms and safety then that is when there is a problem that needs to be resolved. Maybe the US is not the entity to resolve the issue but something has got to be done so that we can all be safer (I didn't say - or mean - safe; I said safer).

What legit religious group or movement bombs their own people and commits suicide bombings or calls for the killing of thousands of people if they don't convert to their fascist beliefs? No, you're wrong, the Taliban are a fascist religious cult that should not be tolerated.

Well, the Afghani government don't seem to think that the Taleban are legal and the Aghani people don't seem to want them either.
