You can give your hamster commerical paper bedding (carefresh), hard wood shavings (aspen), yesterday's news cat litter, or torn toilet paper if you run out of the other kinds.

Do not use soft wood shavings (pine and cedar), commerical fluff bedding, or newspapers. I wouldn't recommend using hay.

Hamsters don't really need hay but if you really wanted to I guess that you could. It wouldn't really hurt them. If you have an aquarium just put some soft bedding down(not cedar)get them a wheel, and use a food and water bowl (you can't mount a water bottle to the glass) ad if you want you could put some sand paper down every once in awhile so that you don't have to cut their nails and get them something to chew on so that their teeth don't grow. Hope all of this helps.

They eat alfalfa pellets but I wouldn't use it for bedding. I know that if an alfalfa stem penetrates a rabbits hide it will cause an infection.

Why not use regular bedding?

Well, bedding is more common. Something like paper or little pieces of fabric put in their cage really makes them happy!

use regular bedding and put a little of that in there. It will still be a treat and that way it will last longer.
