The brightness of my screen goes down when I go on battery power. When I plug it back in, it gets brighter again.
However, now it is stuck in that 'low brightness' mode.
Can anyone help me? I am running Windows XP.

I am runnin on a Dell laptom. Found Fn key and brightness; this did not work. PC is powering up and running on AC power. Thanks for all input.

Your brightness may be set in the firmware of your laptop not the software. If you have a key labled "function" or some abbreviation of that, then you will need to hold down that key and the appropriat "sister key" for adjusting the brightness. Brightness is usually a sunshine-like key. Also, your power settings may need to be adjusted. If your power settings are set to show the screen at a lower brightness level while on battery that is ok, but while on AC power it is not ok. Under control panel you will see power settings. Also, troubleshoot your power. When you plug in the AC adapter to the wall, does the adapter have an LED (light) that comes on to show it has power? WHen you then plug the adapter into the laptop does the laptop show an indication that it is receiving power from the AC adapter?

ok there are several places you need to look, since i don't know the brand, on your taskbar, there could be some power either/saver icon, or an icon on your desktop, the control panel. and power settings
