What's the plot of a story?

A plot is a causal sequence of events, the "why" for the things that happen in the story. The plot draws the reader into the character's lives and helps the reader understand the choices that the characters make.
A plot's structure is the way in which the story elements are arranged. Writers vary structure depending on the needs of the story.
Plot is the structure of events within a story and the causal relationship between them. There is no plot without causality.
The plot of a story is a chain of events, each event the result of some prior events, and the cause of some subsequent events. The plot of a story will extend beyond the bounds of the story itself.
Plot - the main story arc of a literary work
Elements of the Story Arc:
Exposition - introduction of the main characters and setting; “en medias res” in shorter forms
Rising Action - one (or more) characters in crisis
Climax - point of highest emotion; turning point
Falling Action - resolution of character’s crisis
Denouement - “untying of plot treads”; resolution
Plot Structure - one of a finite number of plans in which to tell a story

The plot is the basic sequence of events that construct the story. However to reveal the plot of a novel it is important to recognise the relationship between these events i.e. how one thing happens because of another.

Most of the other answers are not exactly correct. Examples:
story = The king died.
plot = The king died because the queen chopped his head off after he said her cooking was terrible.
Story is simply the telling of waht happened. Plot is the action that motivates events in the story.

It is the basic story line from start to finish. You then need to fill in the blanks with about 400 pages
