Would men and women in a committed relationships be kinder to each other if the ceremony required them to be civil to each other?

I think you're missing the whole point of marriage. Are you trying to take all the fun out of it? In the words of the late Rita Rudner:

I love being married. It's so great to find that one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.

That's not what they mean by "civil" it just means legal. I do think that people who take vows in a church should keep them sacred.

just a piece of paper, people are either civil to each other or not.
