You are going to have a great time in Jordan. Great country with a rich history & warm people. You are going to feel welcomed the minute you reach there.
Very emotional & helpful people. In addition, be prepared to put a few pound on. The food is great & you will have different Middle Eastern, European & Far Eastern restaurants.
Mainly that you have a friend there who will help you & take you everywhere.
Here are your answers:
-- VISA:
For American national & some other nationality, once you reach Queen Alia International Airport, you are going to have your visa in the airport. You pay an amount of JD10 = $14. They will give you a visa for 30 day – renewable-. If you are planning to stay more – which I think you will - Your friend can take you to any police station close to his house & you will renew your visa in 10 minutes.
-- TRAVELING TIPS:
these are cool sites for you:

-- Royal Jordanian Airline:
Good Airline & warm crew that will make you feel comfortable & relaxed.
& Yes, you can bring your snack to the plane.
(enjoy it )
-- CURRENCY EXCHANGE:
I would strongly suggest that you get your Jordanian Dinar at the Airport when you reach Jordan. They will give you a better price. However, you should change $100 only, and then you can make more changes when you reach Amman. Ask your friend to take you to the Exchange Rates offices in Amman so you can have a better deal. – Trust me in this-.
I am American who lived & worked in Jordan for a long time. You will love it.
Enjoy the good hospitality, food, shopping, coffeeshops, & many Bars-Pubs.
Make sure you visit:
-Petra,
-Dead sea,
-Jerash,
-Wadi Rum,
-Mount Nebo,
-North Castles,
-Aqaba,
-& for sure ( downtown Amman)
- Climate:
The climate in Jordan is dry and hot, since the country is mainly desert. However, the western part of the country receives greater precipitation during the rainy season from November to March.
So, make sure you take some jackets if you are going there soon.
If you need more information, contact me on my 360.
Wish you a safe flight & have fun.
cheers.

you chose a wonderful time (spring) to go to Jordan nice weather & beautiful landscape you will obtain your visa in the airport once you arrive there will be a bank where you will change your dollars to dinar (i recommend only changing enough money to last until you can get downtown where you may find a better rate) Royal Jordanian is the best way to fly as you will have a direct flight from US to Jordan it will be longer of course around 12 or 13 hours but it is better than layovers for a day & a half I flew both ways will not go anyway but direct from here on out. you can bring snacks in your carry on of course i also recommend a book of some sort which you will have tv on plane i took a portable cd player that helps too. if you are meeting someone that is good b/c if they are from jordan they will know all the good places to show you have fun! its a great trip. just use common sense like you would anywhere always be aware of your surroundings if you are an American citizen one of the travel tips i got was that you should go to the embassy & let them know you are in the country if you are staying more than 2 weeks you will also need to extend your visa the stamp they give you will tell you to go to the nearest police station if you are staying over the time.....Jordanians are very friendly & the food is excellent....

Interesting country. Take meds with you, such as pain killers i.e. motrin and anti diarrhea meds. You can exchange your money at the airport. You will need to exchange it before paying for a visa at the airport. I suggest you do bring snacks. Royal Jordanian airlines is not in my opinion an A+ carrier, but they are probably the best carrier to travel to Jordan, I heard Air France has smaller seating than RJ. Take a jacket, nights and early mornings are chilly in Jordan during the spring. Take conservative clothing, even though Jordan is supposed to "modern" people basically dress conservatively. Expect to get travelers diarrhea while there. Drink bottled water only if possible. Have plenty hard cash on hand, stay away from the "travelers check", Most merchants dont accept them.
Expect to hagle over prices and be firm even if you have act like your walking away. Learn some common terms, most merchants dont speak english. You must have a passport to travel to Jordan, but you can obtain a visa at the airport, and you will need to renew it at the police station before it expires.
