ikea is great especially if you don't have a car as they will deliver.

The one closest to Amsterdam is over near the Arena...

here's the link to its location
http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/IkeaNearYouView?storeId=9&langId=-22&catalogId=10103&StoreName=amsterdam

You may also try searching in http://www.expatica.com
they have free classifieds and many expats will advertise there when they move. Good way to get cheap furniture was most will want to get rid of it asap. Delivery may be an issue with that though.

good luck.

the cheapest way to get some stuff is
1. find some second hand stores ( i have no idea where they at in amsterdam cause i ain't from there, sorry) ask around
2 . find out about the "grofvuil" day it's a special trash day for bigger stuff people get rid off, the night before it's picked up i always go out and look for nice ****, you be amazed what people trow out, it's usually once a month, just ask about it in your street.
3 get online and go to www.marktplaats.nl it's a nice site where people get rid of all kinds of things

good luck and enjoy your stay

IKEA http://www.ikea.com/ms/nl_NL/ You can get there by subway from Amsterdam central station. They have a lot of cheap stuff, you just have to put it together yourself but that ain't really difficult.

Ikea is good. There are ones all over the Netherlands so I assume one should be close by. They are crowded on weekends so if you can go on a week day.
