The first answer is indeed right. The 1st generation of games (Red, Blue, Yellow) and 2nd generation of games (Gold, Silver, Crystal) cannot be connected with the 3rd generation of games (Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Emerald) at all. However all 3rd generation games can be traded with one another so Ruby can trade with Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green and even Emerald. Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green and Emerald can also accept trades from the following 2 GameCube games:
Colosseum and XD

you can, but you cant do it directly... since crystal and saphire arent in the same set, (red, blue, yellow... or ,in this case gold, silver, crystal) you cant do it directly, but if it's a newer pokemon you may be able send it to to leaf green, then from there to ruby or saphire, if it's an original, you send it to yellow, and then to fire red, then from there to leaf green, and then to ruby or saphire... if that doesnt work then i'm afraid you wont be able to send it
good luck!
