there is a belt to tie them with why is that extra piece of string there?!? this is bothering me....help!

No need to swear!
That extra tie is meant to make your bathrobe a better fit. It also keeps the front from bunching or opening, and you stay warmer!

For females to tie the tie on the inside so the breasts are not exposed.
