Why do some people think that all electronic dance music is techno?

There are many kinds- not just techno. Theres Trance, House, Drum and Bass, Jungle, Break Beat, etc.

It's frustrating (FOR ME) that people can't simply understand the differences:

There's black metal, doom metal, speed, trash, melodic gothic metal, progressive metal, power metal, battle metal, traditional metal, nu-metal, death metal, hardcore/ alternative metal, grindcore metal

Do you know all these differences? No, Yes? Maybe? same idea.

That's like any kind of genre of music. There are SO many sub-categories.

Look at the girl above me. Look at all of the metal sub genres. I bet you didn't know half of them. So how can you expect someone to know all the dance/techno sub genres?

People are never going to really understand all the different genres and sub-genres of music no matter how much a person loves music or listens to it. Everyone has their own opinion and idea of what a certain kind of music is.

I tell everyone I listen to trance, but to others what I listen to isn't trance at all. And, you can even break trance down even more into vocal trance and non-vocal trance.

It's a fight you are never going to win!
