Lance Armstrong, his whole body was riddled with cancer, doctors gave him a less than 50% chance of surviving yet he pulled through to win arguably the most gruelling sporting event in the world ( the tour de France) not once but 7 times in a row. Now if that doesnt inspire you to live life to the full then nothing will, utmost respect for the guy!

interms of sporting ability which will always be recognised and appreciated now matter how the game changes, and how the athletes change.it has to be muhammed ali and maradonna.
I think pele was a great player, but he was more about being ahead of his time-he was very skilled and cunning, but it was his physical attributes of power speed and strength that seperated him from his peers. The top Modern day strikers are just as good as pele.Marodonna on the other hand was the best and now one to this day has come close to him.His skills will always be appreciated as great in any era.It is so clearcut with maradonna, there are no ifs or buts.
Imran khan[cricket],he added a new dimension to fast bowling-reverse swing. It was thought he was tampering with the ball-but nowadays many fast bowlers know how to reverse swing.
Sadly,i have to add David Beckham to the list, because of his pioneering role. Many sports men/women will now immitate him.
He has added the marketing machine into sports players. He has sold his brand by clever marketing. He is most important to Real madrid for the money he brings to the club through merchandise sales ,than his sporting abilities.

i would have to say Barry Sanders or Catfish Hunter. Barry played to sports and he was the first person to hit a home run and score a td in the same week i think learnd that on madden 07 for psp.
Catfish is close because he was a amazing pitcher for THe Oakland A's and New York Yankees 60 wins in three seasons w/ the A's i think and it was said that he had a arm that was over 3 million dolars.

Muhammad Ali

Not only took part in 2 of the greatest boxing matches of all time (Thriller in Manilla & Rumble in the Jungle) but was the perfect athlete. Destroyed opponents with words as well as punches and any man who could beat Sonny Liston is the definition of the word Man. Henry Coopers manager at the time said he wouldn't even let his boxer walk on the same side of the street as Liston, nevermind fight him. Ali proved it all in his career and boxing was at a loss when he quit.

The Greatest and always will be.
