omg i hope not! that is so mean. If there blood isn't good for some reason they shouldn't use it but they can always try to donate. I think it is wrong for gays and lesbiens to be so discriminated against. They can't control it. It's just how they are.

There is some truth to that yes. I donate blood to our local community blood center and that question is on the form. I don't know the particular date or rules and have never had to check the question as yes, but I cannot say if it bars you from donating. I think they could check your blood for HIV and maybe clear you for donation but I don't work for the organization. I do know that they need blood so badly that they have nixed many questions and drugs that used to bar you, but then HIV is a whole different ball of wax and the Red Cross certainly would not want to be accused of transmitting any diseases...they try very hard to be extremely careful with that. But they can only go on what tests they have and how honest people are in answering the admittance forms.

It is only true for those people were born in, or lived in, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea,Gabon, Niger, or Nigeria, since 1977; or since 1977, received a blood transfusion or medical treatment with a blood product in any of these countries; or had sex with anyone who, since 1977, was born in or lived in any of these countries. If the man was not from any of these countries and the man he had relations with wasn't, then the woman is fine to donate. They will, of course, do a blood test first if there is a chance of blood-borne viruses.

Yes that is true, but it isn't intended to be discriminatory. It is to protect the blood supply. It's true we could just let everyone donate, but it would be a waste of money and a danger to the public when the volunteer is in a high risk group.

I know this is an old question, but they are allowed to donate 12 months after the last sexual contact.
Side note: Lesbians can give all the blood they want. You can also be a virginal gay man and give blood, so please stop hating. Military personnel who spent more than six months in Germany in the 80's can't give either. The ARC isn't discriminating against anyone.

Yes this is true. I think they feel that when men have sex with other men, they run a higher risk of contracting the HIV virus. I'm not sure what this is based on, but those are the rules.

probably ---in Canada it is illegal for gay men to give blood with the same criteria...Stupid rule...considering that I am 57 and in a monogamous 20 year relationship and continually test HIV-ve.They could retest my blood when they took it if they liked...I don't get it.
