I've been living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico now since December 19, 2006. I am going to be here until the middle of March. When I entered Mexico, I thought they would give me a tourist visa stamp for 90 days and it turns out it is only for 30 days! I am very scared that when I leave the coutry, they wont let me leave. What can I do? Will they let me leave? Will I have to pay a fine and then they will let me go? Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks so much in advance!

I must add that it's already been 30 days... I have been here now for 60 days and I have surpassed the limit by 30 days. I don't believe they will give me an extension or will they?

YOu can ask for extension one week before the end of your permitted stay. You will have to prove that you can support yoursef without working there. I.e. you have enough money to suypport yourself for the duration.

All the best!/

A tourist visa is good for up to 180 days but you have to tell them 180 days when you get it, otherwise it is only for 30 days. You can get an extension if you apply PRIOR to it expiring.

What to do now? File for an extension and tell them that you asked for 180 days and didn't realize they only wrote it for 30 days.

Be very polite and act pretty stupid. They will give you an extension and a small fine.

Do not try to leave until you have the extension since you have to turn your visa in when you leave and they will give you hell for overstaying your visa and a hefty fine to get out of the country.

Be safe and get the extension now.

They will probably not even look at the dates when you leave. Just don't get checked while you are there

Nothing will happen when you try to leave, but you may not be able to come back...
