You may have a leak somewhere in the chimney or possibly a bird's nest or some other stuff clogging the chimney. You would be wise not to use your fireplace until you find out where the smoke is coming from. To ignore this situation can be deadly. I would hate to read about you and your family in the papers.

I always get a kick out of people who say if your fireplace is smokey when you use it just open a window a little. Those people must not live in a cold climate because who wants to open a window when it is cold outside?! I live in Minnesota for crying out loud!

Honestly, the best thing you can use to keep smoke where it belongs is some glass doors for the fireplace. They will keep the smoke and the sparks in and keep you from loosing quite so much interior heat to the combustion process and the suction of the chimney draft.

Remember to close that damper up good and tight when the fireplace is not in use. If you still have outside air entering even with the damper closed. Get a plug like a chimney balloon and it will keep the room more comfortable.

Stick a pocket mirror up the chimney, the best place is the clean out. You may also have a negative air pressure in the house like a window open or, just the opposite, try it. You may have to clean out the chimney too. We used a roll of barbed wire slightly larger then the chimney and weighted it down with a chain. Works great. Get some flares from Home Depot for chimney fires to save your home if you have a chimney fire, they work well also. It pays to have some on hand.

I forgot, tie a rope on the roll of barbed wire, pull it up and down several times to clean the chimney out.

You need to give the fireplace outside air for combustion, Another possibility is that your chimney has a hole in it and letting smoke into your house.
