what is the difference/similarities between classic gothic literature and modern gothic literature?

all i know is classic gothic literature is from europe and modern gothic literature is from the america (southern) after the civil war.

Look to Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" as a good example of modern. "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is another example. Both of these are short stories.
