My choice dates back to 1946---"A Matter of Life and Death" (released in the US as "Stairway to Heaven")--it's a fantasy romance starring David Niven, Kim Hunter and Roger Livesey.
Niven plays an RAF pilot who is suppposed to have died, but was missed by the angelic messenger who was supposed to have picked him up. Niven and Hunter fall in love, and a trial must be held in Heaven to determine whether or not their love can continue.
One of the greatest romantic movies ever made--witty, funny, moving, thoughtful, and wonderful.

brief encounter is a great film about forbidden love. a tragic story of love and the ending is very sad. it is in black and white and made in the 1950s or 1960s but still worth a watch today.
