I have been working midnight shift since this past July. Every day I go to bed around 1130 am, and try to sleep until 9pm. I wake up every day around 1 pm, sometimes fall back asleep, then wake up several times a day, and fall asleep quick. Sometimes I wake up at 4pm, then can't sleep anymore. I roll around in bed over, and over. When I used to work morning shift, I would have sleepless nights. What can I do? Sometimes I take sleeping pills, and I still am wide awake 4 hours later.

You are trying for nine and a half hours of sleep, which is more than most adults need. Try going to bed an hour later.

Some people say melatonin helps the body adjust to shift work, but I haven't tried it, so I'm only reporting what I've heard. You might consider a short-term regimen of prescription sleeping pills (if you've been using the weaker over-the-counter ones) to get you into the habit of sleeping during the day. Ask your doctor. An herbal sleep remedy, valerian, can also be helpful, but get a reputable brand at a health-food store, as "dollar store" herbs often have very little of the claimed potency.

Do you have a dark, quiet place to sleep? Usually there is a lot of noise during the day, so you might consider some kind of "white noise" like a tape of ocean waves or a waterfall or something like that to block the other sounds.

Good luck - being out of phase with the rest of the people in your life is very tough!

Yeah......I know what you mean.I worked night myself and it's was the same situation. It might help blocking out the sun,I don't know maybe with dark curtains and a fan making noise (you can get use to the sound) don't drink coffee at least three hours before going to sleep and don't think about anything, worries disturbes sleep.Another thing, don't take Tylenol PM or something like that, you'll wake up all drowsy and it lasts a while.Well...that's pretty much it,Good Luck!

It sounds like the sleeping medication you are using may not work for you. Discuss this with your doctor. And take the other advice on this page so far. It is pretty good.

you need to trick your body into believing it is night. hang heavy blankets over your windows to black out the sun. get a white noise machine to drown out the day noises around you.
