For the same reason they still want to come today. They want to be free to build a better life for themselves, and be free to do it on their terms.

Opportunity, mostly economic. Not only the US, but also Argentina and Chile, have had waves of immigrants especially when there's been an economic downturn in Europe.

Freedom, more money, better opportunities. My grandmother could have told you that the US was way better than growing up as a little girl in Italy back in 1926!

They had hopes of a better life, and the dream of freedom. You could understand that after WWI, we were about the only country left unharmed.

The same reason the Mexicans, Cubans etc are now. Poverty, chance for a new life, religious or political persecution.......
