my son says that the free anti virus's are as good as any other...what do you think? - would you trust them as much as one you have paid for?

Just read an article a few minutes ago about antivirus programs. The best one rated today is AVG, either the free version or the premium version. Norton did not rate highly at all, as they have not changed their basic design in years and missed 5 of the most common viruses going around.

Lavasoft is Ad-Aware, the best rated anti-spyware program.

Your son is right. Free is just as good, and most times, better, than the high cost ones. I've used Avast, Ad-Aware and SpyBot for years, and they're all free and all good. I have no viruses and keep the spyware and malware cleaned off my computer.

Something is better than nothing. Nearly all the security experts agree with this. And then it is a question of how much hassle you want.

The only product from Lavasoft of which I am aware is AdAware, which is different from an always-on anti-virus program. I don't know AVG. I use AdAware primarily as a secondary defense against malicious software: it finds things that my anti-virus software doesn't always find.

AVG 7.5 Free Edition is as good as any anti-virus software I've used: I still use it without any problems.
