WASHINGTON (AP) — The first major changes to food inspection in a decade will increase federal scrutiny of meat and poultry plants where the danger from E. coli and other germs is high or where past visits have found unsafe practices.

I suppose it is time someone wrote a modern day version of "The Jungle." It might create a greater movement toward food safety and inspection, like the book did in the turn of the 20th century.

It is a necessary action, and it is a good thing that government is fighting off the food lobbyist to try to reform the inspection process for the betterment of the consumer.

It's too bad there was a major setback to doing this in the Clinton administration due to close ties between Clinton and Tyson.

The real question is why the wacko fringe has kept irradiation from being REQUIRED in all food-processing facilities operating under the aegis of the FDA.

Look it up and then marvel at the number of DEATHS and illnesses that would be prevented every year.

I would say budget constraints 700 billion for a war in Iraq is a pretty penny. Why would we want to check for e-coli when we can fight a war on an invisible numberless constantly multiplying enemy. Isnt that a bigger threat to us than some bacteria??

It hasn't happened yet because the meat, poultry and dairy corporations run the FDA. that is who has been appointing to the FDA. It's all run by corporate insiders.
