Yes. Staring at anything that's close to you for hours at a time is damaging to your eyes. Take a break every once in a while to look out a window or just close your eyes.
Also, if your monitor is a CRT and the refresh rate is set under 85Hz, it will put a lot of strain on your eyes.

So I have been told if you look at them while being in an unlighted room. Wether or not that is true beats me. My eyes are fine and I work almost all day staring at a screen of some sort.

because we see the computer screen without blinking our eyes for long tome. this make eyes become more dry.
so give gap to eyes for every half an hour by seeing long distance objects and blink often.
