Do you have it plugged into the slave side of the IDE cable?

How many devices are on that cable, just the one drive, or another too?

If it works as a slave, I don't see a reason to fix it.

People don't use Master and Slave. Use Primary and Secondary. If you have more than one drive set one to Primary and one to Secondary. Ensure that this is done on both drives, don't assume. If your system boots, push the appropriate key on the keyboard to put your system into the BIOS screens. In your BIOS screens you will see if they drives are detected correctly. If they are not seen correctly in BIOS, then nothing you do in Windows will help. If they are, then go to Windows and see if they are still detected correctly. If not, then Windows needs to be corrected.

Put the jumper pin to the CS mark on the back of the cd drive that should solve your problem.

Have you tried running your cd-rom under cable select? This way it can be on either ide.
