I think polling is an important part of the political process. If done correctly, you can gain an accurate gauge of public support for an issue. We live in a democracy, and we should hold our leaders accountable to our beliefs.
The cons? It is easy to complicate results by flaws in polling method. It is impossible to check every firm that has ever created a poll to ensure accurate methodology.

Polling is a way to see what the majority of people want. If you are open to the needs of your constituency, then you will have a long, fruitful political career. On the other hand, if you never listen to them and force things down their throats, because it is what your lobbyist friends want, then you're in trouble.

Polling is imprtant to see trends but should not be the be all and end all in making decisions.
