Lots of bad advice up there, including Gary P that wants them to over crowd the 55 gallon tank.

The first thing they need to do is get a heater. That will open up lots more options. If they want a really cool exciting fish for the tank, tell them to get a 2 spot pike cichlid. It wont outgrow the tank, but will be so cool when it eats. They will love it.

Unless they're getting goldfish then the heater comes first. Oscars get big & are easy to care for, but keep in mind that all tanks require regular cleaning and feeding in order to mantain a level of equealibreham, so if they are not around much then maybe just a picture of a big fish!

Do not listen to anyone else in this forum, because they are all either girls or panzy men. If you have 2 male freinds living in a house with one big aqarium then what you want to get is a Flower Horn cichlid or Red Devil Cichlid. Trust me on this once you see a live one in person you will think, DAMN THATS A FISH ONLY A GUY WOULD LIKE. trust me on this if you need more info email me i have several flower horns and red devils ill show you my tank

A rainbow shark is good, or a pumpkinseed sunfish. They don't get too big and they like to be alone.
