There is no actual scientific classification for invertebrates. Invertebrate is simply a term used to describe all of the myriad critters that don't have backbones, that is all of the critters which are not within the Subphylum Vertebrata of Phylum Chordata.
There are huge numbers of invertebrates that don't live in the ocean (i.e. pretty much all of the insects), aren't slimy (again, all of the insects), or don't have exoskeletons (all of the molluscs, like octopus, and slugs, and worms like annelids and nematodes).
While there is but a single phylum of critters with backbones, there are dozens of phyla without them, from sponges and jellyfish to arthropods, molluscs, and echinoderms to weird things like bryozoans and brachiopods.

The previous answer is incorrect because ALL mammals are vertebrates. I don't know how you are supposed to divide invertebrates into only two things though...Invertebrata contains 8 phylums of which contain many classes and subclasses...Sorry I can't help more

No backbone. 95 percent of all animal species are invertebrates. Only fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals have a backbone and are considered vertebrates. This label is a subphyla of the phylum chordata.

An invertebrate is an organism or creature that has no spine, or vertebrea. Most (maybe even all) shellfish fall into this category as well as all worms and their cousins that live in the sea

Thanks for the homework question. I always try to give the most accurate question, because, well honestly, you don't want to reread the material. Why should you? You have yahoo answers to cheat... erm... ask the answer from.
The answer is: they all have exoskeletons
