I want to optimize rendering times, what's the most important thing to upgrade? I've got a Dell Dimension 9150 with:
3.0 ghz Pentium D Smithfield
1gb Ram
GeForce 6800 256mb PCI express
160gb 7200rpm SATA

Rendering performance (not in the edit window, but when you actually hit render) is tied to your CPU speed and RAM.

Your RAM in this case should be pretty good. What I'd consider doing instead is upgrading to a 64-bit processor and upgrading Windows and 3d Studio to 64-bit versions.

When rendering, 3d studio does a lot of math with 64-bit numbers and 64-bit processors are more efficient at that.

If you plan to stay on a 32-bit setup, get the clockspeed as high as possible and/or go with multiple processors (you can get motherboards that take more than one CPU)

I'd get a good set of Blaupunkt speakers, that's what I'd do, nice equip there.
