I have been told that some sort of vitamin can help to prevent mouth ulcers, but do not know which, or if it is even true. Can any one help?

Canker sores (mouth ulcers) are believed by some to be caused by a deficiency of vitamin B-12, zinc, folic acid or iron. Stress or an injury could also cause them (see link below).

A home remedy that I have always used and my 13 yr old also finds very helpful is to apply alum to the ulcer. It doesn't taste nice but after a min or so you can rinse your mouth out. Applying alum to the ulcer once or twice a day for a day or two will usually clear them up.

I don't know about vitamins helping. My mom has suffered from mouth ulcers for years and the dentist never told her anything about taking a certain vitamin. My mom is good about eating healthy and she takes her vitamins and all. She did notice that eating foods that are acidic cause breakouts. She switched her toothpaste as well. Rembrant makes a toothpaste that is specifically for people with mouth ulcers. My mom found this gave her much needed relief. Also taking a tea bag (after using it in hot water so it is activated) and pressing it against the ulcer helps, or try baking soda or gargle with salt water. Hope this helped!

You need to take vitamin C. I used to get mouth ulcers as a child all the time. My mom would make me chew a vitamin C 3 times a day, then I had to start taking vitamin C supplements. The vitamin C made this diappear- i havent had one in over 10 years. make sure you get GOOD vitamin C- not the walmart or naturemade brand. go to GNC or an all natural food store.

Definitely not a vitamin deficiency but nobody knows what causes recurrent apthous ulcers. They are so painful and annoying. The current thinking is that they are some sort of autoimmune phenomena. Immune supressants seem to work but the side effects of these medications are not worth the benefit.
