Call it a subcategory of "analysis paralysis". Is everyone so set, on their ideology, that no concensus can ever be reached on any issue? Does the government benefit, and even promote, this deadlock amongst the populace; or are they simply left waiting for the people to play their role in this Democracy and tell them what actions to take?

You're overthinking it - big time!

Get out more and listen to what's going on at the grassroots level in this country - lotsa great ideas out there and people willing to put their time and money on the line to try 'em out, too.

Don't worry - be happy.

Just a note of correction. This is not a Democracy. Rather, it is a Republic.

There is, indeed, a form of "Ideological Paralysis". There is a huge struggle going on between the people who would see this nation torn down, and the ones who want to see it strengthened.

The governemnt doesn't promote this gridlock (although I believe the Democrat party does), but there are too few people who have the courage to stand up for our country.

This is the way to power. Keep the politically aware fragment of society at war over nonissues like abortion or illegals things that neither political party has done anything about in basically forever. The rest of society worries over Brangelina and who is going to win American Idol. By the time you have some rational fragment left they are so few and well dispersed they are completely powerless.

The second part of your question is spot on.The people have a role to play and often they are not playing their role. Its is to blame politicians and then do nothing..It is the old problem you declare that your organization is democratic and you ask your members
what they want they will almost always ask what are you going to do.When 80,000,000 to 90,000,000 dont bother to vote well enough said.

Only on the radical side of American politics. The radicals on the right being Evangelical or Fundamentalists Christians and hard core left wing liberals. The rest of America or the majority is still fairly moderate and they aren't on Yahoo answers which is made of mostly radicals.

I see nothing wrong with fighting for what you believe. Its when you water it down that things become dangerous. Case in point. The congressional non-binding resolution. Democrats weren't willing to stick to there beliefs and take it all the way. They proved yet again to be spineless. All they did was give aid and comfort to the enemy without restricting the President whatsoever.

Many people agree with you. Politics are run by special interests, and each individual has his or her own special interests. However, the country pulled together as a unit in WWII and it can do it again.

So long as the people reside in splinter groups, that is how long the dividers will rule. Listen to their moans, hear their gripes, watch them run about looking for consensus.

Keep them splintered and you keep control.
