I had a cesarean with my son, a bikini cut. This was 12 years ago and they knocked me out. I had heard that they only do epidurals now if you are going to have a c-section and to be honest I don't want ANYONE sticking ANYTHING in my spine EVER!
If I wind up with placenta previa again, will I be forced to have an epidural rather then getting knocked out?

I'm so glad to hear that the rumor is false. I have heard too many horror stories from friends and family to even consider an epidural. Even if it isn't in my spine and just right around it, hell no!!

They cannot force you to have an epidural, you have to give consent. If you are placenta previa and you refuse an epidural and cannot deliver naturally they will have to knock you out. Good Luck and I hope everything goes well!

General anesthesia is dangerous for both mother and baby, and surgeons try to avoid it if they can.
My first C-section was an emergency, and it was done with an epidural, and it wasn't pleasant. (Although I have to say that the administration of the epidural didn't hurt at all, and the surgery itself was fine, but the shakes and nausea afterward were killer. Nothing like uncontrolled vomiting and shivering when you've got a big hole in your belly! Especially after 3 weeks of bedrest, 52 hours of labor, and 3 hours of pushing!)
My second C-section was planned, and it was way better. Yes, still meds administered through a catheter in the spine, but I actually don't know if it was a spinal or an epidural. In any case, there were NO side effects of the drugs, and I was way more comfortable both during and after.
You should talk to your doctor about your concerns. I'm betting that they will strongly recommend against general anesthesia, but...
And you may be putting the cart before the horse. I mean, lots and lots of people - as many as 20% - have placenta previa at some point in pregnancy, and for most of those folks the condition resolves itself with no treatment and no need for a C-section.
So think positive, and talk to your doc.

you could opt to have a vaginal delivery with your next child UNLESS placenta previa occurs. the kind of c-section that you had does not MANDATE your future pregnancies to result in c-sections.
placenta previa happening twice is NOT very likely UNLESS your uterus is riddled with scar tissue allowing for conception to only happen over the cervix.
don't stress yourself out over this... there are to many "what ifs" here. if an epidural would make or break your decision to have another child... then you need to talk to your OB BEFORE you ever attempt to get pregnant again.

Epidural is not in your spine, its in hte spinal region. The only time someone will put something in your spine is for a spinal tap and even now those are not recomended for anything. go to http://webmd.com and look at what the epidural does and how it is inserted.

I had an epidural with my son, who was born via C-section, and believe it or not it did not hurt at all! I mean--the needle did not hurt going in.
I would ask the hospital if you have an option to be out during the C-section.

I had a C-section w/ my 1st child. My 2nd and 3rd child were vaginal births. Was scared to death to get epidurals, but got them and it wasn't so bad.

I had a c-section with my first one who is almost 6, and they knocked me out. I had t ohave another one with my second who will be 5, and they were going to make me be awake for it, and I freaked out because Ididn't want to be awake..and I panicked so bad that the baby was in distress and they had to knock me out. It wasn't fun though because she was in the NICU for over 5 hours to control her heart rate. Just explain to your doctor your fears and they should be able to accomodate you!
GOOD LUCK!! AND CONGRATS!!! with MANY BLESSINGS!!!
