My little soap holder/handle thing fell off, so I went to reattach it, but by chipping away the old "glue" there were softened areas of wall that gave way and now I have a big hole in the wall! It smells like mold too. I stopped digging in there, because cleaning it out was creating a bigger problem. Help! It's the only shower in the house too, so it's an emergency - I don't want water to get in there, but tearing out all the tiles would be a HUGE job, and I don't know how to retile.

The mold smell is telling me that water is getting behind the wall and causing the real problem. That has to be fixed because the rest of the wall tiles will be following the soap dish. In the mean while. Take a plastic bag and cut it a little bigger than the hole and duct tape it to the wall. make sure you get the tape into every crease. you will have to replace this often though until you fix the wall.

Unfortunately, the only way to fix it is to fix it. You need to find out how bad the mold. It sounds like the substrate for the tile has deteriorated. You may be able to find matching tile and patch part of the wall but without knowing how bad a problem you have it is hard to say. I think you might need professional help for a permanent repair. In the meantime you need to make sure no water gets in. Seal the area with plastic and duct tape until you can have it fixed. Don't call Home Depot.

I hate to say this , but you are probably going to have to call a repair guy. Your local Home Depot should be able to fix you up with a repair man.

now for a quick fix..... get some duct tape. ( the roll of gray tape) at any hard ware store. Get some plastic, a large zip lock bag will do if it's bigger than the hole. Then tape it all around the plastic. Just make sure the wall is dry where you are taping. This should keep things dry til you can get the repair guy to fix it. And hey, the guy might be a looker (lol).

I agree with the first answer. You definitely have some underlying issues in the wall. Your best bet is to get it fixed by taking the wall down and repairing the water damage.

I agree with the plastic and duct tape. Perhaps a little silicone sealant under the plastic will help keep the moisture out as well.

In Canada we have a company that specializes in this area, they call themselves THE BATH FITTER. They come in and measure and quote you a price. What they do is install new acrylic tub and surround. A friend had it done years ago as they had the same problem. The cost was approximately 1300, as they opted for a high end unit. This all gets done in less than a day after the pieces are manufactured. You can also do this yourself by purchasing a tub surround kit from HOME DEPOT OR LOWES. But be warned it's not an easy job if you do it yourself.
Good luck...

never overlook the obvious, the wall just sounds porous and letting the steam get in,is it a painted wall,if it is then just stop using the shower until it dries out,get some fans in there and get the windows open for a couple of days, damp plasterwork smells like mould anyway, once its dried then just plaster up the hole and then paint the bathroom with a good quality bathroom paint taking extra caution with edges etc, rake and regrout all tiles and just make sure there is nowhere that steam and splashes can get back in to the wall.it could most likely just be a patch round the soap dish anyway as they are most prone to splashes from hands etc.i can come and keep an eye on the wall whilst you have a shower if you like LOL
