last year we tried to grow butternut squash which we had two of, they were tiny. We left them on the plant thinking they would grow but they just rotted. Our pumpkins were also fairly small and two of them rotted on the ground. any tips?

Both of those plants are heavy feeders. Also - harvest them when they ripen (turn the "right" color) - they will not get any bigger after that, and will merely rot.

The plants are also susceptible to a lot of different bug problems - vine borers, striped or spotted cucumber beetles, which transmit bacterial wilt.

Some years I get good corps, others I get stinky harvests. If it's dry late in the season - the fruits will be small. Pick them anyway when they start to ripen.

dont plant untill danger of frost is gone ..late may to june..feed plenty of fertilizer and water, last year was terrible for squashes it was too dry. dont let them get too short of water and you should be okay.
