Metal didn't really come to mind when I first read the question, but most forms of pop music are built around image rather than musical substance. The pop punk, boy bands, trendy rappers, and pretty much anything you hear on the radio or see on MTV. But the metal style does, I believe, offer itself up to attract a stereotypical fanbase because of the formulaic nature of the music itself. It doesn't offer a great variety in the way of moods, colors and atmosphere and much of its fanbase reflects this with their sullen attitudes and exclusively black wardrobe. I would like to add that I am well aware not all of the listeners of any musical style fall into these cliches, but I think it is worth noting that any movement in popular culture will attract many identity-seekers who will try to make themselves fit into the image projected by its proprietors. Hence, both "emo kids" and saggy panted "thugs" wearing Nascar jackets.

No. I don't think so. I'm black and I listen to all types of musical genre:
Rap/Hip-Hop, R&B and Soul, Doo-Wop, Country, Rock 'n' Roll, Blues, Jazz, Heavy Metal, Punk, Folk, Swing, Electronica, Funk, Disco, Reggae, Classical, World Music...etc. You get the idea. I look like a young sophisicated gentleman instead of those stereotypical "thugs" that you'll see on MTV and BET. My images and my taste of music turned most women off (which I don't understand), but at least I'm happy just the way I am, and that's all it matters.
MORAL: IMAGE ISN'T EVERYTHING!

I don't really think there is an image. I love country but I also like some rock, jazz, swing, and blues. I don't really like metal, no offence, but I'm am really open to different kinds of music. I know someone that you would think he would prefer only jazz but he's in a blues band and he use to be in a rock band! He's really cool though. There can't really be an image in music cause all people like different things that you wouldn't think when you look at them.

And that's why stereotypes usually don't work. I loved and still do motown and jazz amongst alot of other type of music, but people in the south in the late sixties automatically assumed I was black because of that. I'm a blue eyed blonde Canadian.
No stereotypes work anywhere and if they stopped tomorrow we might have a more peaceful world.

I extremely rejoice with metalcore myself. i've got seen extremely some human beings around right here bashing it recently, even though that's going to consistently be a style costly to me. in any case to answer your question, i won't be able to undergo in strategies how many situations i've got long gone via extensive classes of time the place i've got strictly listened to in basic terms jap music. i'm consistently in and out of that area. Ever considering my creation to jap music, that's been an incredibly consistent area of my musical existence. it is so consistent that I consistently take word on each occasion i'm listening to western music (i.e. each thing else on my iPod) for longer than an afternoon. MA1: The few interior reach bands i understand are certainly favorite, and that i do no longer pay attention to any interior reach bands that are no longer, so i'm taking the latter selection. MA2: i did no longer. I in basic terms like one music via them in any case. MA3: they have that? :O

I don't have that problem. I like 60-70 music and even with shorter hair I look like an ex- Hippie, or so I'm told. (Again and again and...)
