I really have enjoyed Wilbur Smith lately. The books I liked had to do with Ancient Egypt, which is a subject that fascinates me. I enjoy reading books that seem to have thoroughly researched a subject matter. I feel that Wilbur Smith paints an acurate and personal look at life in Egypt all those years ago. He makes it fun, a feeling that you're actually there, living in a different culture. On the con side, he throws in little bits of disgusting depravity that is totally unnecessary to the plot. I don't like that part.

Michael Chrichton is another that did some very extensive research in the book Timeline (the only of his books I've read) His research was into time travel theories, and yet he sounded so convincing in the science behind the machine. He also researched France in the medieval times that his story was set. The bibliography at the back is tremendous. I respect authors who do research to write historical fiction. It's a funner way to learn than reading a textbook.

I have many favorite authors but if I had to pick one it would be Toni Morrison and especially the novel Song of Salomon. I like her work because it is written so authentically in an American perspective and gives us insight into the ramifications that slavery has had on the African American people in the U.S.

My second favorite is of course Milan Kundera because nobody can say it any better about the human complexities...love love love him!

John Bailey ("The complete Guide to Freshwater Fishing"), Chris Yates ("Falling in Again: Tales of an incorrigible angler") + John Wilson ("John Wilson's Greatest Fishing Adventures") because their fishing books are written in such a way you almost end up racing down to your nearest stretch of water with a fishing rod screaming "LEMME AT 'EM!!!!!!!"

Also Jeremy Clarkson ("Clarkson on Cars", "Born to be Riled" + columns in the Sunday Times + TOP GEAR magazine & TV series), as the stuff he writes is some of the funniest stuff you'll ever read > http://www.topgear.com/content/features/category/clarkson/1.html

So many books, so many authors, how can anyone have one favorite? Depending on the genre I have about twenty or thirty that I regularly read and new ones are always popping up.

Kate Atkinson. She has fabulous characters and her novels are funny and serious, and her short stories are actually worth reading, which isn't true of all writers. Try "Case Histories" and see for yourself.
