I suggest you read up on it and pratice with an old computer that doesn't matter to much if it get's ruined or not. The 1st and most important step in makin your OS is learning how to write to the boot sector. Nothing else matters intill you learn that. Here is a good link on how that works. You will need to learn "Computer Programming" and get a "Compiler" to program with.
Also, as a quick start you can get a Linux Kernel, it will give you the source code, and go from there. I think it use C++ programming language I not real positive. There another it use called "Pysol" I thinking, may have spelled wrong.
But, either approach, starting from nothing, or, using the Kernel you will most likely need a Compiler.
