Can anyone tell me where one gets a network key also called a WEP key or WPA key from? The computer is asking for this information when I try to connect to a wireless connection.

The connection you are trying to connect to has WEP enabled to secure the wireless connection.

If you know where the wireless access point or router is located. Then ask the owner of the equipment for the key. Hopefully this will be either you or your employer, if it's a neighbour you may have problems obtaining the key.

Once this key is enter on to your laptop you will the be able to connect to the access point.

These WEP keys can be cracked as the security is old and hackable but you would have to go to specialist web sites to find out how. WEP has been superceded by WPA which is more secure.

will firstly you need to have a broudband router / modem in your home..

If you have, then when you follow the set up instructions and you well then be given a wep key..

You cant access other broadband connections who may be in your area if they are secured,, hence the reason you are being asked for a wep key..

if your trying to connect to a wireless network thats not your own and its asking for the wep key its basically asking for the password and unless you have access to it, tough luck.

now if your trying to access your wireless network at home and its asking its obviously because your wireless router is password protected. whcih i do recommend doing.

now go to your router by

clicking on start --> run---> type cmd then
then type
ipconfig /all
and your router's ip address (gateway) should show
for example
192.168.2.1

next open your internet explorer browser or mozilla whichever you use and type in that address into it
itll give you direct access to your routers setting. next go to the security settings and check out what your wepkey is and type it in on your laptop and ur good to go.

You could try finding out who owns the router that your
trying to connect to & politely ask for the key, good luck!

This is too complicated to answer online.

Call Acer and / or your router's tech support number. They will walk you through the process.
