From a historians perspective I would attribute it to three things:

1. The emphasis on education. Whenever there is a world crisis that brilliant minds are needed to resolve, where do ALL nations of the world look? Mexico? Yeah, right. Iran? Not a chance. Albania? Why? They look to America because of the emphasis America has placed on education and the advancement in learning.

2. Our willingness to accept change and social reform. If you travel to an eastern land (Iran, Iraq, Turkey, China, etc...) you have to set your watch back 200 years. Social change is NOT encouraged there and change is retarded as a result.

3. Our willilngness to correct wrongs. Blacks in America harp and cry and pout over slavery in America, but they seldom have the sense to recognize that we also ENDED slavery in out country because we realized it was wrong. That is something Africa (their native land) still has not done. We granted rights to women, native Americans, children, immigrants, minorities, and any who voiced a legitimate concern for their rights. Eastern countries have yet to recognize that.

It is for these reasons that the civilized world is LED by the west and predominantly the United States.

Principally bec. young men had unstructured lifes, unlike in the ancient societies, and started to play around with science and machines. Women get credit too. They probably increased overall arousal by being public, causing higher enervation. The downside is that the increase in technology caused corresponding weakness in the structural solidity of society.

One answer, (which will not be popular,) is that the 'west' as you call them were following the example of the bible principles. God shows His favor to the people who found that His ways were best and followed and gave allegaince to God.

Europe has had a long history of religious tenets holding the laws and governance together. Read the Magna Carta.

Ditto the USA: I mean, look at the Founding Fathers who were mostly Bible-believing Christains. they based the tenets of the country upon those Bible truths.

Sorry if this is unpopular, but history has attested to these events and God is allowing progress and success. Ah well.
