These days, royalty play the role of head of state while the respective elected leader is the head of government.

Royals are not JUST kings with their wives as queens. The monarch of the British Empire is Queen Elizabeth II. As for why rulers aren't ruling their kingdoms, it is because the government only gives royalty limited powers.

What do you mean, precisely, by "ruling" their kingdoms? Absolute monarchies are not the norm throughout most of the world these days; it is the constitutional monarchy which is de rigueur. If you check Wikipedia, or ye ol' encyclopedia, you can research the history of royalty since it is such a huge and (for some) contentious subject!

Only one reason, just plain stupidity. A king is a tyrant if he rules, and a useless expensive public parasite if he's just a figurehead, as most are nowadays. Putting up with either one is the height of stupidity!
