I've always been an okay artist, but my art teacher (I'm in 11th grade) said I could easily become a graphic designer because I did a project using Photoshop and she said it was wonderful. I've always wanted to be in animation or something along those lines, but I don't know how to even start to reach that goal or how hard it will be for me. Besides drawing, what else do I need to do to become a graphic designer? And what should I do to prepare for it even though I'm only in grade school?

Well, you shouldn't have to do anything. If you absolutely love it, then it will come naturally. Play on photoshop if you LOVE to do it, draw, make logos for websites, if your passionate about it, YOU'll know what to do. When you get in the 12th grade, you can start looking for colleges, and by then you will know if your really want to be a graphic designer. Oh, and just try different things..you make like making websites too...

It's not too early to start looking at colleges. I started looking the summer after 11th grade. If all you really want to do it become a graphic designer, look for a 2 year school that offers something along those lines. Depending on your financial situation and how far you want to go, you may want to consider completing a bachelors degree in the field. This will open you up to possibilities as a project manager or even something higher. The higher your degree, usually companies will pay you a higher starting salary. I have no idea where you are in the country, but no matter, you can go wherever you want for college. Check out Alfred State College in New York for an Associates Degree (2 yrs.) because if you complete their 2 year degree and want to go for a full four you can transfer across the steet to Alfred University (where I go, currently a Junior). Alfred is a great small town with 2 colleges within a mile of eachother. Tons of fun!

If you love animation then you should study animation, not graphic design. You can always pick up on the graphic part as you go. For now you can practice on your drawing skills, either you are going to need it. And start looking in college or trade school for animation or graphic. Preferably both so if you don't like animation after all, you can always change major which is very common in college. I was a fashion design major who switch to graphic design after the first semester. Remember graphic design it's not just Photoshop, there a lot of other program like Illustrator, Indesign, QuarkXpress, Freehand etc... so there will be a lot of learning for you if you do pick it. But first of all, be a good artist. The rest will come. Good Luck!

Create a designer portfolio with some of your work examples and try to get noticed in some websites that encourage amateur designers. Also it would be great if you could send some works for professional designers. Your age is just perfect for starting, so don't feel too young :) I know only jurgita.com where you could add your portfolio for free, but maybe there are some more as well :) Good luck
