Why are so many parents giving their baby's solid food so early? I'm talking at two to three months. Are there pediatricians out there that aren't telling parents that it's not good for baby? That their systems aren't developed enough? I'm bewildered.

I think there are a lot of people who are unaware of the damage they can do to their baby's immature digestive system by introducing foods too early, especially harsh acidic foods like orange juice. Yikes!

I don't know why either! I followed my pediatricians recommendations and didn't start him on solids until the AAP guideline of 6 months. My son was only getting breastmilk up until that point and started sleeping through the night at 3 months old. I don't think there is any connection between solid food and sleeping patterns. I just think that some babies are better sleepers than others. Their little systems do not need solid food until closer to the first year. Parents just love to rush things. Personally I don't get it because formula/breastmilk is a lot faster and less messier than when they start solids!

A lot of people are just plain ignorant, and they think that by giving their baby solid foods at earlier stages, it's a proof they have a smart baby. In reality it means the poor baby has stupid and ignorant parents, or a very lazy mother who doesn't want to be dealing with the bottles.

I understand your bewilderment, the only reason I can think of is that parents want to sleep through the night. They need to accept that babies are not convenient. I agree, babies' systems are not developed enough, and in addition they are still only sucking and have not developed strong neck muscles or chewing action.

My son was 2-3 months when I was told to start cereal, and he said 4 months for baby food.

don't worry. trust your instinct, I am a mother of 2 girls , and know very well that you can give mashed food and juices as early as 2 months but always depend on the child whether having any disorders or not. i usually start at 2 months with orange juice then after a while cereal.

when i had my first child the rule was to introduce solids at 4 months....i did....2 years later when i had my second it was 6 months so i waited.....
i cant believe people would give their child solids at 2-3 months as you have stated...they are obviously not listening to what they are being advised and therefore probably doing more harm than good....some people are just silly and want their kids to grow up sooner rather than later.....

i agree with you. i started my son on "solids" at 7 1/2 months. he started with chunks of avacado, cooked sweet potato, cooked cubed carrot. my son was also bigger at birth (8 lbs 12.9 oz) and breastfed ever 1 - 1 1/2 hours but i just kept nursing as often to keep him full. i dont see the hurry to start solids.

i started my son on solid food at 14weeks, he took to it really well and digested it just fine, spoke to health visitor said it was fine, he was a big boy at birth and was having 9oz formula every 2 - 3 hours, filled him up more and he is now 22 weeks and as healthy as ever

They are probably doing it so their babies will sleep through the night. I agree with you. I think it is too early.
