They don't Most fish go thru a hybernation state. (Not all fish) Pond fish, carp koi goldfish once the temperatures drop below 50 degrees, their boddy begins to slowly shut down. Food is not a requirement. (Just like bears). Most lake fish go thru the same type of Hybernation, however bass, walleye perch are located in deeper waters and feed mostly on smaller fish in hybernation state. Since the colder temps of the water have slowed their metabolism, less food is required to "power" the fish. Pond fish, can go all winter without eating, lake fish can pretty much do the same. But since they are in such deep water, will continue to feed at a slowed pace on minnows, crayfish, water fleas etc.

(This is why ice fishing in some places is so popular)

Because people like fish? Is there a problem with that? On what statistics do you base your presumption that fish is more scarce than beef or pork? @ Chris; You say Lent is unbiblical? Why did Christ fast in the desert for Forty days (which, coincidentally, is the length of what the Church calls Lent, which is from the Old English and German word meaning spring)? Further, since Lent is a period of fasting and penitence, please explain why Jesus says "WHEN you fast" in Matthew 6. Fasting is not an option for a Christian, and since Jesus says nothing about HOW to fast, why is it wrong for the church to set guidelines?

I once had goldfish live in an above ground pool over the winter. We never fed them anything and the surface froze. They lived off the algae and thrived. They got large and that summer I sold the fish.

They are inside so it doesn't matter if they are tank fish, but in the water they are able to adapt in the cold weather. They eat shrimp, other fish, or even algee.

Depends how cold it gets. In most places it gets cold enough that the fish just go dormant and do not eat anything.

there's algae, bacteria, etc. trapped in the bottoms of tanks, lakes, etc. etc. Just like how certain animals can withstand extreme temperatures, so can certain fish--of course there's the fish who can't live in areas with harsh cold temperatures

Below 50F most fish digestive systems shut down and they don't need nutrients or anything, kinda like a bear hibernating.

When temps drop fish metabolism decreases and they need less food. They will probably maintain their usual food sources if it is still available to them. They will eat less and have less activity until temps increase again.
